It will offer a se ries of ethnographic case studies that highlight the role of affect and eth ical judgement in engagements with socio-economic transformation in contemp orary Laos. This panel enquires into the culturally-specific resources, nar ratives and histories people in Laos draw on to make sense of and morally e valuate fast-paced change in their everyday lives. What role do affect, aes thetics, memories and histories play in these ethical judgements? How do se ntiments like awe, scepticism, fear, aspiration and nostalgia shape comment ary on/engagement with ongoing social, cultural and economic transformation s?\n\nTackling these questions, this panel will take a participant observat ion-based approach, showing how values and locally/culturally-specific conc epts connect with how things “really happen”.
